Creating a Positive Learning Environment: The Happy, Relaxed, and Engaged Approach

At MAC Midwest, we believe that every individual deserves therapy that is not only effective but also compassionate and trauma-informed. That’s why we employ the Happy, Relaxed, and Engaged (HRE) approach throughout all of our ABA therapy programs. This progressive model prioritizes the well-being of each learner, creating an optimal environment for growth, skill-building, and meaningful connections.

What is the HRE Approach?

The Happy, Relaxed, and Engaged (HRE) approach, developed by Dr. Greg Hanley, is an evolution of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy that emphasizes emotional safety and learner comfort before and during the process of teaching new skills. Traditional ABA has often been criticized for its rigid, compliance-based methods, but today’s ABA, including HRE, focuses on meeting individuals where they are and supporting them in ways that align with their needs and preferences.

The Three Components of HRE

For a child to be ready to learn, they must be in a state of:

  • Happiness – They are content in their environment, have access to preferred activities, and are not trying to escape or avoid interactions.
  • Relaxation – They feel calm, comfortable, and free from anxiety.
  • Engagement – They are actively interacting with their environment in a way that is meaningful to them, whether that’s playing, communicating, or exploring.

These three elements work together to ensure that learning is a positive experience rather than a stressful or forced task.

Why is HRE Important?

When learners feel safe and supported, they are more receptive to skill development and social engagement. Research has shown that achieving an HRE state before teaching new skills can:

  • Reduce severe problem behaviors
  • Increase participation in therapy sessions
  • Improve generalization of skills across settings
  • Foster stronger relationships between learners and therapists

By creating a learning environment centered on HRE, we can empower children to develop at their own pace while maintaining dignity and joy in the process.

How HRE is Implemented in ABA Therapy

At MAC Midwest, we integrate HRE into our therapy sessions by:

  • Building relationships first – We take time to learn about each child’s preferences, communication style, and unique motivators.
  • Creating a welcoming and flexible environment – Our therapy spaces are designed to be safe, comfortable, and filled with engaging activities that interest the learner.
  • Following the child’s lead – Rather than imposing rigid expectations, we incorporate their interests and strengths into therapy sessions.
  • Using assent-based practices – We recognize that learners should have a voice in their therapy, allowing them to opt in and out of activities as needed.
  • Encouraging self-advocacy – Instead of emphasizing compliance, we help children build the skills to express their needs, preferences, and boundaries.

A More Compassionate Future in ABA

HRE is part of the movement toward today’s ABA, which focuses on trauma-informed, ethical, and person-centered care. Instead of prioritizing behavioral control, we prioritize emotional well-being and meaningful learning. By ensuring that every child is happy, relaxed, and engaged, we are not only improving their ability to learn but also fostering lifelong confidence and independence.

At MAC Midwest, we are proud to be at the forefront of this compassionate approach. If you’d like to learn more about how our therapy programs can support your child, contact us today!
